NEW FEATURES - BSP1
The Beery SuperPatch (BSP1) fixes a number of problems with the original Red Baron 3D game. It also adds some features and generally cleans up the 'look' of the game. Below are some of the new additions.
Alterations to Aircraft.
| Here we see two versions of the DH2. Above left is the original Dynamix version. Above right is the BSP version - you can see that the wingspan has been reduced in my version. Dynamix used the same strut structure for the DH2 as they did for the FE2b - making it a 2-bay biplane. Unfortunately the DH2 was a single-bay biplane. While we can't change the strut configuration, it is possible to make the wingspan more accurate. The shapes of all aircraft in BSP have been altered to suit working drawings of the original aircraft. | ||
The Luftwaffe - in WW1? I Don't Think So.
| At left, we have an example of a WW2 Luftwaffe badge with the Swastika cut off. Unfortunately, in the original game this image purported to be a WW1 pilot's badge. At right is my own graphic that I drew for BSP, based on a real WW1 pilot's badge image. | ||
The German Medal Box Problem.
| At left, again the original game's German medal box uses the incorrect image to represent the German Air Service of WW1. At right is the BSP graphic, which I made from a real photo of a WW1 pilot's badge. I think it looks pretty good. | ||
Language Difficulties.
| At left, we see the original RB3D French rank structure, while at right is BSP's corrected version. All the spelling in the game has been checked, and any mistakes in every language have been corrected. | ||
Paint Schemes in 3D.
| Above is a Fokker DVII from the original version of the game. When Red Baron 2 was upgraded to 3D, the old paint schemes were not altered, leading to panel lines and shadows which do not match the 3D shape. | ||
| Here is a BSP Fokker DVII. As you can see, the lines are much cleaner - the radiator is much better defined, and the panel lines are exactly where they should be. Every aircraft covered by BSP was lovingly repainted to match exactly the 3D shape. Also, I copied the exact pattern and colour for the German lozenge fabric and applied it in the correct sized strips just as they did on the real aircraft - the results are quite impressive. | ||
The Usual Suspects.
| If you've played single player RB3D, you know what I'm talking about - the guys at Dynamix took black and white photos of themselves in flying caps, and then added the resulting mugshots to the lineup of player-pilot images. Although they did a great job creating the game, the guys at Dynamix don't make convincing WW1 pilots. I figured we needed more realistic images. | ||
| Here are just a couple of images from my new set of historical player-pilot images. There are 35 images in all, split into 15 generic, 5 British, 5 German, 5 French, and 5 U.S. pilots. The images I used for these are those of lesser-known aces of WW1. The two shown above both happen to be aces who later wrote of their experiences: at left is Cecil Lewis (author of 'Sagittarius Rising'), and at right is Arthur Gould Lee (author of 'No Parachute'). | ||
